Anyone watching Chelsea’s title-winning side this season might scoff at the idea the Blues need to add to their charges, but Jose Mourinho doesn’t rest on his laurels.
After his first title win at Stamford Bridge a decade ago – having sealed top spot with a record points tally with a side many remember as one of the Barclays Premier League’s finest ever – he revamped the team in the summer.
Out went the likes of Tiago, Scott Parker and Mateja Kezman, in came Shaun Wright-Phillips and Michael Essien, the Ghanian secured by Mourinho to overhaul one of the league’s finest midfields.
Essien went on to be a roaring success in west London, with the new-look Chelsea going on to win a second successive title. Again, Mourinho changed the side, bringing in Michael Ballack, Ashley Cole, Salomon Kalou and an ill-fated move for Andriy Shevchenko.
Mourinho will do the same this summer to aid a renewed battle at home and abroad. Chelsea are looking to strengthen all areas of the squad, and are in the market for a goalkeeper, a full-back, a midfielder and a striker.
However, if dream signings Gareth Bale or Paul Pogba became available, the first XI would see a major overhaul.
At the heart of discussions will be Financial Fair Play, which Chelsea have so far played to a tee. The likes of Oscar and Filipe Luis could well make way to balance the books.
Gary Neville believes Chelsea could dominate the Premier League for years to come if they were to sign Gareth Bale from Real Madrid.
After a difficult second season in Spain, there has been speculation that Bale could return to England this summer, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea among the potential suitors.
Speaking on Monday Night Football, Neville said the rest of the league should be worried if newly-crowned champions Chelsea managed to land Bale ahead of United or City.
