For the past week, rumors have been swirling that Maryland commit Justin Anderson was wavering on his pledge to the Terrapins. There was talk that he already made another commitment to Virginia and just hadn’t announced yet.

Anderson made it a done deal on Thursday.

“Great day to be a Cav!” Anderson tweeted.

"The Cavaliers were always my second choice behind Maryland," Anderson said in a statement released by his high school. "Also, my family lives in Virginia. After the departure of Coach [Gary] Williams and Coach [Robert] Ehsan it just feels like the right fit."

Anderson, a 6-foot-5 small forward from Montrose Christian (Md.), is one of the most athletic players in the country. He is a menace in transition and uses his energy and motor to be a lockdown defender at the other end. Anderson is one of the few players in the country that can impact a game without scoring due to his leadership qualities. The lefty has improved his outside shot and excels at crashing the offensive glass.

"Justin decided to revisit his options after Gary [Williams] retired," Montrose coach Stu Vetter said. "Although Mark Turgeon wanted to begin recruiting him, Justin and his family decided to conclude the process."

He joins a solid 2012 class for Tony Bennett that also includes top-100 prospects Evan Nolte and Mike Tobey.

Forced to scramble to find a new head coach after Ed DeChellis abruptly left for Navy, Penn State reportedly called Larry Brown on Thursday.

According to the Patriot-News, Penn State athletic director Tim Curley reached out to Brown, but told him the school was looking for a candidate with more recent college coaching experience.

“I'd be interested (in Penn State),” Brown told the Patriot-News' David Jones. “But I don't really feel like there's much interest (from Curley) in me.”

Josh Brown is a 6'2 guard at St. Anthony's High School that is part of the 2013 class. As a sophomore, he is already receiving a bunch of interest from several Division I programs.

Florida Atlantic, St. Joe's, Rutgers, Seton Hall, and Texas Tech have all become interested in Brown's services.

For people that have never seen you before, how would you describe your style of play?

JB: "I would say I'm a slasher. I can shoot the ball, and I'm a competitor. I'm always pushing to be better than the next person, it can be anybody. That's who I am. I'm a competitor."

What are you looking for in a school?

JB: "My favorite school that I want to go to is Temple. My mother went there so that's why I want to go there. I know that they have a great academic background, and I would love to start a career there."

Have you watched a lot of Temple basketball? Were you a big fan of them growing up?

JB: "Yeah. I was born in Philly."

:)

The details from Syracuse freshman Fab Melo's arraignment hearing earlier this week did not paint a pretty picture. Melo pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of fourth degree criminal mischief, a charge that stemmed from a Monday incident in which Melo broke the windshield wiper and turn signal apparatus on a female's automobile while said female was sitting in the passenger seat, according to court papers.

So, no, not a pretty picture -- but still only a partial one. A few days later, more details about the incident are emerging, and they do not look good for the highly touted but disappointing Syracuse freshman.

According to the Syracuse Post-Standard, which obtained the police incident report filed after an interview with the alleged victim, the woman in question is Melo's girlfriend. Melo and his off-and-on female interest have been involved in physically violent situations "four or five times" since they began dating in October, according to the interview.

Monday's incident was allegedly no different. The woman, a student at SUNY Upstate, said Melo grew angry after seeing messages from other men on the woman's Facebook wall. After that, Melo allegedly threw a computer on the floor. When he realized the computer had been damaged, he began throwing it against the walls. Things only got worse from there:

She went to the apartment’s bathroom and shut the door. She soon left the bathroom, grabbed her belongings and left the apartment. She was in her car when Melo came out of the apartment, picked up some dirt and threw it on her. Melo walked behind the car and demanded she open the trunk.

She refused.

Melo approached the driver’s side, reached in the window and snapped off the turn signal control arm, which also controlled the car’s wipers and high beams.

She noticed Melo was bleeding from the hand.

“Here, you want my blood,” she quoted Melo as saying as he smeared blood on her shirt.

She drove off at that point.

The question now is what effect the incident will have on Melo's career with Syracuse. Will Jim Boeheim be forced to dismiss him from the team? Have there been past incidents the public doesn't know about? How bad is this? Did this pattern of behavior have anything to do with Melo's suspension in February, as OrangeFizz.net reported Wednesday? And what does the following Facebook post from Melo (culled from the link above, because Fab and I aren't friends on Facebook, unfortunately) sound like the big man is ready to move on?

“When I came to Syracuse, I was supposed to focus on school and bball but things went out of my control, I made mistakes and I will deal with it. These 3 years in U.S. was great for me, some people may think the opposite but what I’ve learned in here nobody will take from me.”

There was already doubt as to whether Melo could ever live up to the hype he carried with him before arriving at Syracuse as a freshman. Now, pending the outcome of this case -- and remember, Melo did enter a not guilty plea, so we've yet to hear his side of the story -- he might not get a chance to do so. What a strange, sad turn that would be.

Former Dayton guard Juwan Staten is transferring to West Virginia.

Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins says Monday that Staten has signed a grant-in-aid to attend West Virginia. The 6-foot, 180-pound Staten will have to sit out the 2011-12 season due to NCAA transfer rules and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Staten started 34 games as a freshman for the Flyers last season. He averaged 8.5 points and 5.4 assists in 29 minutes per game.

Huggins announced last month that former LaSalle center Aaric Murray also was transferring to the school. Murray led LaSalle in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots
