Grizzlies vs. Trailblazers Game Postponed
Memphis, Tennessee, January 6, 2004 – The Memphis Grizzlies game at the Portland Trail Blazers game scheduled for tonight at The Rose Garden has been postponed due to severe weather conditions in the Portland, Oregon area. The game has been rescheduled to be played at Portland on Wednesday, March 3 at 9 p.m. CST.
It is the first time in Grizzlies’ nine-year history that a game has been postponed and just the third postponement of a National Basketball Association game in approximately three years. The last time that a National Basketball Association game was postponed occurred on Feb. 17, 2003 with the Toronto Raptors scheduled to play at the Washington Wizards that night, and the previous postponement occurred on Jan. 25, 2000.
Grizzlies Head Coach Hubie Brown said it is the first time as an NBA head coach that a game with his team was postponed. A two-hour delay to the start of a game with the Buffalo Braves at the Brown-led Atlanta Hawks was the closest occurrence to a postponement, he said.
“It’s unfortunate that tonight’s game can not be played since we’re here,” said Brown. “We had a full preparation for the game, but we can undertstand the concerns about the travel conditions in this city. My next concern is getting a successful departure this evening from Portland and an arrival in Salt Lake City tonight, so we can have a reasonable time period to prepare for our game against the Utah Jazz tomorrow night.”
Grizzlies forward Bo Outlaw, a nine-year NBA veteran, adds “It’s the first time that a postponement has happened to me in my playing career, from high school and college to the pro level. My first reaction after hearing the news was ‘Whoa. This is new.’ Now, our biggest concern is traveling to Utah in this weather to play our next game. It’s easy to focus on to play well against the next opponent, because it’s what we must do as professionals in the NBA.”
Memphis will play their next game at the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. CST. The team is scheduled to depart Portland at 6:15 p.m. PST on a private charter plane for arrival in Salt Lake City later tonight. The Grizzlies updated schedule now features a four-game road trip to be played over seven days from March 1-8. The updated road trip is as follows: Monday, March 1, @San Antonio Spurs; Wednesday, March 3, @Portland Trail Blazers; Saturday, March 6, @Los Angeles Clippers; and Sunday, March 8, @Golden State Warriors.
