It didn't have to happen this way, where the 76ers are about to turn the point guard position over to Lou Williams, who has never really played point guard in the NBA before, while letting Andre Miller leave for nothing.
The Sixers could have traded Miller before the deadline in February, gotten something in return while finding out if Williams could play the point guard position over the final two months of the season.
Of course, that might have meant missing the playoffs, and those three extra home games, and those untold number of fans who all of a sudden developed championship fever and lined up to renew their season tickets. OK, maybe not.
Now, the Sixers are going in blind, not knowing if Williams can be an effective NBA point guard.
That's because Sixers president and general manager Ed Stefanski decided to keep Miller at the deadline, then take the chance that he would re-sign him over the summer.
But Stefanski had to know in February that he couldn't keep Miller. He had to know then that the salary cap and luxury tax numbers would either stay the same or go down, that he couldn't give Miller anything near the $10 million a year he earned last season, that he wasn't going to commit to anything more than two years.
He had nothing to lose by giving Williams the opportunity back then.
The Sixers were a mediocre team and lost in the first round of the playoffs to Orlando with Miller. They could have done the same thing with Williams at the point.
Maybe Stefanski didn't want to give off the impression of surrendering to the fans. Theo Ratliff gave that impression anyway when he blasted the coaching staff after that humiliating 25-point loss in Game 6.
The Sixers, if you remember, went 14-4 leading into the All-Star break. They were within a game of fifth place in the Eastern Conference, which would have meant avoiding Orlando, Boston and Cleveland in the first round, which would have meant a fighting chance to make it to the second round.
The logic might have worked, too, if not for Thaddeus Young's ankle injury in April, which resulted in the Sixers' 1-6 finish and matchup with Orlando. That set off another chain of events, starting with Tony DiLeo's decision to return to his previous position of assistant general manager.
That led the Sixers to hire Eddie Jordan, who will likely run his Princeton offense without a true point guard.
With that turn of the ankle and events, revisionist history would say the Sixers should have traded Miller when they had the chance.
Now, they'll most likely be left with nothing for a guy who averaged 16.3 points and 6.5 assists per game last season, whom teammates raved about for his ability to always find them with precision passes.
But Miller is looking for a three-year deal, at or above his salary from last season. The Sixers don't want to offer more than one year, at around $6 million.
Miller is 33. His defense is declining. The Sixers don't want to make a long-term commitment to him after they drafted a point guard in Jrue Holiday, whom they hope will be ready to take over in a year or two.
The Sixers are currently looking into sign-and-trade possibilities, hoping to salvage something for him. But it's hard to believe that a team will feel the necessity to pay Miller the $10 million a season he's seeking over three years in this economy, especially when a team can sign him for the mid-level exception of $5.85 million and not give up anything.
After all, Mike Bibby stayed with Atlanta for three years and $18 million and Jason Kidd stayed with Dallas for three years and $25 million. They are both better than Miller.
Miller just had the market set for him. He can either come crawling back to the Sixers (unlikely), or take the same offer, perhaps from a team with a legitimate chance to win a title.
That will leave Williams, a self-described shooting guard, as the point guard.
Williams only played the point in short spurts in the past while Miller was getting a rest. Now, he'll go into training camp as the probable starter.
The Sixers signed him to a 5-year, $25 million extension last summer. Maybe that will motivate him to prove that he deserves to be an NBA starter. The Sixers are certainly paying him like one.
The Sixers could have known all of this by now. Instead, they decided to chase an unattainable goal with a point guard who never figured into their long-range plans anyway.

¿Que os parecería obtener a Kirk Hinrich?
Sería un gran refuerzo para los Sixers en la posición de base, sustituyendo a Andre Miller, en mi opinión.
