But JVG seems to have opinions that directly contradict what Thibs has been doing
• Like I said, he supports playing the kids and absolutely loves Grimes and McBride
• He talked about Cam’s potential and him needing to find a niche that will get him on the court first, then fleshing out his game from there. But not to force bad shots when trying to work your way into a role
• He talked about Randle forcing things and overdribbling. He talked about his bad body language and questioned his leadership
• He absolutely HATES the starting lineup and said continuing to trot that group out there while expecting success but getting the same disastrous results is the definition of insanity
• He said the starting lineup lacks energy, plays selfish, and doesn’t bring it every game. He said it’s more than one person (Randle or Kemba) and inferred several players from that group need to be broken up
• He said the bench unit plays in a way that is unselfish and is a joy to watch
• He said IQ is miscast as a point guard, being forced to play there with Rose out. Says he is better off the ball
• He didn’t seem to be overly impressed by Obi, who had a great game. I’m saying this not due to any direct commentary, but every time Obi made a standout play, JVG would redirect his commentary to someone else. This may indicate Thibs is telling him negative things about Obi and his game.

Julius Randle is not, in any way, shape, or form, capable of being part of a winning team at the moment. It is impossible. It is impossible because of his inefficiency, impossible because of his attitude, impossible because of his effort, and most of all, impossible because of his ego.
Randle still thinks he’s the same guy who finished 8th in MVP voting last year. While the drop off in his level of play has obviously been incredibly damaging this season, it’s not nearly as damaging as the fragility of his psyche. Instead of looking inwards, he seeks others to blame. I’d wager anything that Randle blames his season-long struggles on the fact that he was asked to adjust his game to accommodate Fournier and especially Walker. Of course, he never wholeheartedly made an effort to adjust at all. Worst of all, he’s unable to face the sad truth that he is headlining a team spiraling out of control, and yet again refused to discuss it last night.
By not speaking, Randle is all but confirming the theory that he is unwilling to accept reality. He knows he is incapable of owning this, so he remains silent. The coward’s way out if there ever was one.
Cowards cannot lead, which brings us finally to Tom Thibodeau, who continues to treat Randle like the leader he was a season ago. I wrote a couple of days ago about Thibodeau’s struggles to hold his star player accountable amidst his poor play. I suggested that Randle’s fragility had a lot to do with that, as did Thibs’ own refusal to believe that his enabling had gone from such a positive to a glaring negative.

One factor to consider as the deadline approaches: The coaching staff and players haven’t always been on the same page this season.
As noted in late December, some Knicks players felt that the decision to bench Kemba Walker revealed an inconsistency in decision-making from Tom Thibodeau and his coaching staff. Those players felt that the entire team wasn’t held to a consistent standard.
That feeling lingered in the weeks after the decision, per people familiar with the situation. At the time, those people noted the chemistry/connectivity between players and Thibodeau/his staff wasn’t as strong as it had been last season.
Three things to point out here:
I can’t say definitively whether that dynamic exists at the moment. It’s possible that any lingering issues have been smoothed over.
Disconnect between NBA players and coaches is fairly common when teams underperform.

Randle has been consistent all year.
Consistently bad.
Zach Lowe confirms the Knicks would like to move Fournier, but it’ll cost them. He also mentions they’re getting plenty of calls on Immanuel Quickley.
Seems like teams think the Knicks are desperate to improve the roster and want to poach IQ for a quick fix.
