Add one more Hall of Famer who came to the support of Carmelo Anthony. But this one, Scottie Pippen, puts the blame for the Knicks woes at the feet of his former Bulls championship coach, Phil Jackson, and feels his old boss should get out of New York.
“I’m going to have to go at my old coach Phil Jackson. I think he just hasn’t put the right pieces on the floor,” Pippen told ESPN host Rachel Nichols, who eventually asked the six-time champ if Jackson is the one who should be out in New York.
“Yes,” replied Pippen, who spoke glowingly of how Anthony has handled his situation, including being publicly criticized by Jackson earlier in the season for his role in the offense.
So put that in your triangular pipe and smoke it.
Pippen’s comments, on the show “The Jump,” came one day after Knicks legend Bernard King praised Anthony’s handling of his situation.
“How he deals with it is seen every night. He comes to play and he delivers every single night. That’s how you deal with it,” King said. “I know the difficulties of having to carry a ball club and that’s tough. And you’re not winning, that’s really, really difficult.”
And the Knicks certainly are not winning. They are headed for their third straight 50-loss season, all on Jackson’s watch, and were eliminated from the playoffs for a fourth straight year. No wonder Pippen is not enamored of Jackson, even with those six titles they won in Chicago, while being appreciative of Anthony.
“I give a lot of credit to Carmelo, who is being very professional,” Pippen said. “Now he’s being benched to some degree, they’re taking a lot of his minutes away. But this team just hasn’t had it. They haven’t had it since Phil Jackson landed there. There hasn’t been any upside.”
Since Jackson took over, the Knicks are 87-167 (.343), including a 10-5 record closing out the first month of his regime. He fired Mike Woodson and the coaching staff and is on his third head coach since.

One Knick frustrated the ‘most talented’ team he’s played on was a bust: As a rookie in 2008-09, Courtney Lee went to The Finals with the Magic who lost in five games to the Lakers coached by Phil Jackson. That was frustrating. But not as frustrating as falling short of the 2016-17 playoffs with the “most talented” team Lee has been a part of, a Knicks team assembled by the same Phil Jackson. -- New York Post
