- Picks are agreed upon. Knicks are willing to give up the picks necessary!!!!!!
- Stalemate is the Jazz want 2 of Obi, Grimes, and Quickley just to make the deal look better
- Knicks don’t want to give up 2 of the three but are willing to give up 1 (Grimes)
- Knicks don’t want to give up both(all of the picks + young guys)
- Expects the deal will get done before training camp
- Wouldn’t be surprised if it dragged out to the trade deadline(unlikely) if Utah continues to insist on 2 of Obi, Grimes and Quickley.
The Knicks and Jazz recently renewed trade talks regarding Donovan Mitchell, but New York remains cautious about parting with a huge number of future assets to acquire the All-Star guard, writes Marc Berman of The New York Post.
Multiple sources tell Berman that the Knicks recoiled from the original demands by Utah team president Danny Ainge, who asked for seven first-round picks in addition to young players on controllable contracts. Talks remained dormant for a while, but the teams have re-engaged each other.
According to Berman, New York’s front office believes adding Mitchell would improve the team by about 10 wins, taking it to the 47-victory level. The concern is that there would be no way to improve beyond that if the franchise gives up a significant number of its draft assets.
“Getting from 47 wins to 57 wins, that’s harder than 37 to 47,’’ a coaching source told Berman.
Berman notes that the Knicks traded this year’s first-round pick to clear cap room to add free agent guard Jalen Brunson, and the team could be in danger of losing another selection if the NBA determines that tampering occurred in the Brunson signing.
Coach Tom Thibodeau is strongly interested in adding Mitchell, Berman adds, but he’s staying out of the spotlight while the process plays out. Berman cites a belief around the league that Thibodeau would prefer to part with RJ Barrett in a Mitchell trade rather than give up second-year guard Quentin Grimes, who’s a better defender and long-distance shooter. Berman hears that Ainge is “hot to acquire” Grimes for Utah’s rebuilding project, and Berman’s source says Grimes wouldn’t be opposed to leaving instead of having no chance to start behind a Brunson-Mitchell backcourt.
Barrett, who averaged 20.0 PPG last season, is eligible for a rookie scale extension until October 17.
The Knicks are still trying to find a way to bring Donovan Mitchell home in a way that makes sense. According to multiple industry sources, the Knicks were turned off by Utah team president Danny Ainge’s initial demands, when he asked in July for a package of seven first-round picks and players. Talks died, but recently there has been renewed back-and-forth.
The Knicks’ major concern, according to sources, is giving away too many future assets, which could leave them stuck in an area far below championship contender. Adding Mitchell, they believe, would be good enough for a 10-game leap to 47 victories. That would put them straight into the playoffs as viable second-round threats
There is belief around the league Tom Thibodeau would prefer to give up RJ Barrett in a deal than shooting guard Quentin Grimes, who is coming off a solid rookie year, and a summer league in which he looked quicker and more sculpted. Grimes is a better defender and 3-point shooter than Barrett. Ainge is hot to acquire Grimes for his Jazz rebuilding plan. One individual believes Grimes would likely be amenable to joining Utah since a Brunson-Mitchell backcourt would a roadblock to ever becoming a Knicks starter.

Un mes más tarde, Karmele Berman vuelve con lo mismo...According to @JakeLFischer, the #Knicks are not expected to agree to a contract extension with SF-SG RJ Barrett this far in advance of the October deadline.
Ainge likely would prefer to negotiate Barrett’s contract.According to @NYPost_Berman, some in the #Knicks organization aren't fully convinced that SF-SG RJ Barrett is worthy of a 4 year $185 million maximum contract extension. Barrett was eligible for the rookie extension on July 1, but the Knicks have to see how the Mitchell sweepstakes.”
Stephen A Smith on SiriumXM w/ @RickKamlaSports this afternoon when asked about potential Mitchell deal:
"Utah didn't want Julius Randle, from what I'm told. They don't want him. The Knicks were willing to unload him. They want RJ Barrett. They want at least 6 1st-round picks."
Obi, Fournier + fillers y en cuanto a picks, 5 rondas (tres de ellas con protecciones)The Jazz and Knicks are in discussions on a trade that would send Donovan Mitchell to New York, according to sources. A deal is not considered imminent yet, but the Knicks are motivated to acquire Mitchell and have proposed new packages to Utah’s new front office led by CEO Danny Ainge.
New York made a recent offer of Evan Fournier, Obi Toppin, additional salary and two unprotected first-round draft picks (five total), league sources tell me and The Athletic’s Tony Jones. The Jazz’s asking price has been more significant than that.
Mitchell has three guaranteed years left on his contract, allowing the Jazz to bring him into the upcoming campaign and take a patient approach to trade discussions. The Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizards have been among the teams interested in Mitchell as well, sources said.
@TommyBeer
The reason why RJ likely won't be included is NY values Barrett far more than Utah.
So if NY gave up Barrett - they'd likely only be willing to throw in a couple of picks.
Utah would much rather receive a package with plenty of (unprotected) picks vs. a Barrett-centric deal
