While the official NBA awards will not be released until the end of June, the votes for the Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year award were released today. And, not surprisingly, Doc Rivers placed on the ballot. He was one of eight coaches to receive votes (with Raptors’ coach Dwane Casey winning the award), so it’s unlikely he got more than one or two votes, but still, there was some appreciation there.
Doc did a masterful job of handling the Clippers through a transitionary and injury-plagued season, somehow leading them to a record over .500. Other coaches (and national broadcasts) praised his efforts all year, deservedly so.
Doc probably won’t place on the regular NBA awards ballot, as the Clippers fell apart down the stretch of the season, and there were so many other terrific candidates. However, his performance this season deserved to be recognized, and in a small way, this was part of that recognition. Doc clearly remains a respected and well-liked coach among his peers (and around the NBA), just another reason for the Clippers potentially extending his contract this summer. Maybe next season, Doc will have another shot at winning the official Coach of the Year award once again.
Tyus Battle is in Los Angeles these days, working on his game in preparation for the NBA Combine.
Battle, who finished his sophomore season at Syracuse as his team's leading scorer (19.2 ppg), completed his school work at SU, went home to New Jersey and then flew with his father to California, Gary Battle said.
There, he continues to work to improve his game. The NBA Combine, for which Battle is one of about 70 players to accept invitations, takes place from May 16-20 in Chicago.
"He's working on his entire game," his dad, Gary, said, "but he's really working on the NBA 3-point shot with the NBA ball. And everything is being tightened up."
Tyus Battle worked out for the Los Angeles Clippers this week and could also work out for other NBA teams before leaving for Chicago next week. Gary Battle said his son played well during the Clippers workout. There had been some discussion about whether Battle would work out for teams before the combine, but Gary Battle said Tyus "really wanted" to participate in workouts.
Barring anything unforeseen, Battle will play 5-on-5 at the combine. He will also be measured in various categories (hand size, wing span, body fat, etc.) and be tested through various drills that measure leaping ability, quickness and speed. Those scrimmages and tests will take place May 17 and 18 with ESPN2 providing coverage from 3-7 p.m. each day.
Jerry West will officially represent the Los Angeles Clippers at the 2018 NBA Draft Lottery on Tuesday night. It will be LA’s first lottery since 2010.
