“As long as Bird is around I will only be the second-worst defensive player in basketball." ~ Charles Barkley
He was a lot like Magic, not a very good individual defender but a good team defender.
no.
He was probably ahead of Magic a little as a defender.
As a one-on-one defender, especially on the perimeter, he was below average and slow-footed.
Bird played mediocre defense. Nash plays no defense
In much the same way that Dirk, Nash and Carmello are now all decent to above average defenders although they are all considered weak defenders due to their early years.(A mi Dirk, Nash, Melo me parecen 3 de los peores defensores de la actual NBA, si ese es el umbral de exigencia, tb lo compro.
P.e. Pierce me parece
bastante mejor defensor que ambos.
Larry Bird was an excellent team defender. He was a poor one on one defender. Kevin McHale or Cedric Maxwell would always get the tough frontcourt player to defend and Bird played the weaker one. This allowed him to cheat and help his other teammates in their team defensive schemes.
From what I've both seen (mostly full game playoff footage) and heard he was a poor man defense
Bird & Nash's defensive strengths and weaknesses are in the same places. Fine to prefer Bird across the board - not fine to pretend Nash doesn't try and doesn't have one of the best BBIQ's this side of Bird(Otro que me lo compara con Nash).
Was a sterotypical example of a player without all that much athleticism who still managed to be a decent defender. A lot like Stockton. What made him good was how smart he was on offense and defense..(Este mea fuera de tiesto.
So now we base his defensive ability on
1) getting steals(If I can't man up, I have to back off and play passing lanes?)
2) funneling my man to the 2 shotblockers (covering for me because I can't man up)
When other players play this style, they are labelled as poor defensively. Bird played in an era where you were able to use your hands more defensively on the perimeter, yet he still couldn't man up.
Bird was great offensively, rebounding, and passing. He did what he could on defense but he was below average.
