My fists were always clinched in fear and frustration when Jamal was swaying at half court draining clock to inevitably heave up an awful contested shot. It was only every 5th or 6th game that Jamal cooked, and only half of those games was it impactful. He was a band-aid for Doc’s thin benches and predictable play-calling. He also wore his heart on his sleeve. Great guy, good teammate, but not a composed, end of game captain of the ship.
Lou is always composed, period. Late games, interviews, with his teammates. Take away, for a moment, the fact that he has been a reliable scorer and not a streaky scorer. Even if he was streaky, we have confidence that he can bring the ball up with options. He can go left and drain from the perimeter, he can beat his man off the dribble and attack the basket, (and what was so noticeable last night) he can attack the basket in a slow step and drag his defender into contact a la James Harden. He also has made some ridiculous baseline jumpers. He’s dangerous everywhere on the court. Add to that a very capable passing game and it’s clear how much of a more complete player he is than Jamal. He’s not a band-aid, he’s a solution. I guarantee you not one Clipper player on that team is averse to seeing the ball in Lou’s hands in late game situations. The same can not be said for Jamal.
I keep thinking about how limited his mins were in preseason and those first couple games. It’s a blessing in disguise that injuries have forced him into a significant role. I hope he’s a Clipper for years to come.
Sorry, Jamal. Love you, man. Thanks for everything, but Sweet Lou the real MVP.
