Former 115-pound champion Martin Castillo returns to Telefutura to meet Colombian Jonathan Perez in the 10-round main event on Friday.
Castillo did not look his usual self when winning a unanimous decision over veteran Oscar Andrade in July, his sharpness and timing not quite what they used to be, but this was only his second bout after a 10-month layoff in which he had a plastic surgery operation on the frequently cut area around his eyebrows. It was encouraging that even though there were head clashes he did not get cut over the eyes against Andrade.
I understand that if Castillo comes through in satisfactory fashion he will be matched with Jorge Arce next March. Castillo’s manager, Frank Espinoza, said over the phone from Los Angeles this week: “There are big fights for Martin at 115 pounds, guys like Arce, Fernando Montiel, Cristian Mijares, but we don’t want to look past the guy we’re meeting on Friday.”
Friday’s opponent, Perez, won a bronze medal as a bantamweight in the 2003 Pan American Games but after winning 12 fights in a row (nine inside the distance) he lost in step-up fights against Alejandro Hernandez and former light-flyweight champ Erik Ortiz. He has since come back with a KO win in Colombia.
Perez, only 20, can punch and he comes to fight but Hernandez was too clever for him and Ortiz too seasoned. Now he meets a highly skilled former world champion who will be motivated by the prospect of the big fight with Arce. It looks like one of those mission-impossible situations for Perez.
Castillo is not usually what you could call a big puncher but he can punch with authority and Perez does not seem all that hard to hit. I do not expect a quick ending but I think that Castillo can wear down Perez with an accumulation of punches and perhaps stop him in the ninth round. The gulf in class seems far too much for Perez to handle.
